Some towns are destinations; some are doors. Vilanculos, on the southern Mozambican coast, is officially the second kind — the mainland gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, the five-island marine national park scattered across the horizon offshore. But spend a few days there and the door turns out to be worth the trip in its own right, and the smartest travelers on this coast have started planning around that fact. Why the gateway matters
The Bazaruto islands — Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and little Bangué — sit 35 kilometres off the coast, inside a marine park protected since 1971. There is no ferry, no bridge, no airstrip open to scheduled island-hopping: every visitor arrives by boat, and essentially every boat leaves from Vilanculos. The town has the region’s airport — Vilanculos (VNX), with direct connections from Johannesburg — the park office where conservation fees are paid, and the beachfront where day boats load each morning.
That gives travelers a genuine choice of shape. The famous version of Bazaruto is a five-figure island-lodge stay. The Vilanculos version inverts it: sleep on the mainland at normal-country prices, and treat the islands as day trips — 45 minutes out by speed boat, back by late afternoon. Same dunes, same reefs, same dugong channels; different arithmetic entirely.
What the town itself is like
Vilanculos is a real Mozambican town, not a resort strip — markets, bakeries, fishing dhows on the tide line, guesthouses from backpacker to boutique strung along a bay that faces the sunrise. The pace is unhurried in a way that surprises people arriving from South Africa’s tourist circuit. Seafood is the local economy, not a menu theme.
And it has its own headline act: the dunas vermelhas, the red dunes just north of town — deep ochre, iron-stained sand rising off the coast, climbed barefoot in the late afternoon for a sunset that looks across to the whole archipelago silhouetted on the water. Between the dunes, kitesurfing on the bay, long empty beaches, and the boat days, a “gateway” stop stretches naturally to four or five days.
The islands, from town
The day-trip menu out of Vilanculos covers the whole park. The classic is Bazaruto and Benguerra in one day — the giant dunes at Ponta Dondo, snorkelling at Two Mile Reef, beach lunch, the seagrass channel where East Africa’s last viable dugong population grazes. Magaruque, the closest island at about 14 kilometres, is the gentle family option with its shallow natural-pool lagoon. Santa Carolina, the northernmost, adds the ruins of the 1950s Paradise Island hotel. From June to November, humpback whales migrate through the park and whale-watching joins the list — a menu deep enough that the local crews, who grew up on this water, happily build it around whatever days you have.
The planning takeaway
Fly into Vilanculos (or drive the EN1 up the coast), give the town four days minimum, and let the islands come to you one boat at a time. The Bazaruto Archipelago gets the magazine covers, deservedly. But the open secret of this coast is that its most flexible, most affordable, and arguably most local-flavoured base was never on the islands at all. It is the town looking at them.
